B A R E I L L Y — A concept inspired by my family’s rich cultural heritage and the way my grandmothers would dress. Like many Indian Muslim women, especially from the Uttar Pradesh (U.P) region of India, they wore flowy silhouettes with their hair pulled back in simple braids and gold jhumkas. Modest, understated, elegant. My Naani’s signature look even today is a light pastel shalwar kameez with delicate jewelry and her hair pulled into a neat ponytail or bun. My personal style couldn’t be more different, but as I grow older I find myself longing to relate to that sensibility and somehow make it my own.
This series is a celebration of brown feminine strength and a sartorial expression of gratitude towards the women who made me.
